The short film, produced by the late Virgil Abloh, explores the duality of time.
28-year-old British filmmaker and photographer Bafic captures the most intimate moment of American track star Sha’Carri Richardson’s life in a way that feels both poetic and precise. Chronicling her journey to the Olympic trials in 2021, his film—produced by the late Virgil Abloh—premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Richardson is one of the fastest women in the world across 100 meters, a title she earned at 21 years old after qualifying for her first Olympics on the eve of June 19 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. “The gun is going off. The people are in the stands. I’m on the track,” she recites, seconds before the race. Her voice is on a loop, repeating the sentence over and over again as she prepares to put a lifetime of training into a performance of less than 11 seconds.
“We learned about Sha’Carri a few months before the Olympic trials, and Virgil, Mahfuz, Bafic, and I all had this obsession with athletes doing incredible, seemingly impossible feats, as well as their relationship to artistic innovation,” Sultan says. “Sha’Carri became an inspiration for us the same way we talk about the likes of Michael Jordan.” The production, backed by Nike and recently launched on’s digital platforms, was birthed by an initial curiosity around Richardson and her story.
Collectively, Sultan, Mahfuz, Bafic, and Abloh were intrigued by the real mechanisms behind a star athlete versus what the external world believes goes into the making of one. “As people, we’re all interested in art practice and things that on the surface don’t appear to participate in what we would think is traditionally involved in a particular art practice; track and field is one of them,” Mahfuz adds. “You’re completely alone out there.
