One resident took matters into his own hands.

Five months ago, after years of watching cars blow through the stop sign outside of his home on Cortland Avenue in Bernal Heights, Brian Utter decided to take matters into his own hands. Utter, who is a general contractor, built an 8-by-8-foot stop sign and mounted it high on the western face of his three-story house.

One of the SFMTA’s most recent additions to Cortland Avenue — a mile-long street stretching from Mission to Bayshore, flanked by Holly Park hill to the south and Bernal Hill to the north — are four speed cushions, two on each end, that were installed in July 2021.Speed cushions, which can be found across San Francisco and in many cities throughout both California and the U.S., are distinct from the more familiar speed humps in that they have gaps, also known as slots.

Cortland Avenue, which cuts through the center of Bernal Heights, has developed into the social heart of the neighborhood in recent years. Cortland establishments help with many pedestrian-friendly events, including the Bernal Heights Hillwide Garage Sale, Halloween trick-or-treating and the Holiday Stroll.

But despite the street’s pedestrian-friendly vibe, and its 25 mph speed limit, multiple people have been hit by drivers on this road, including one
