A mix of recent storm systems and dry weather has 'resulted in far greater accumulation of sand on the street and the promenade' than San Francisco Public Works has experienced in recent years.
that last year involved redistributing an estimated 30,000 cubic yards of sand from the side of the roadway to the ocean.
“In some respects, it’s a Sisyphean task of moving it back,” Gordon said. “You’ll always be moving it back west toward the ocean as long as we have a beach and the roadway there without large buffers. We’re not going to build a big wall at the Great Highway and Ocean Beach to keep the sand from intruding the road.”
Gordon said San Francisco Public Works hopes to work on the southbound lanes this week, pending staffing availability. “We do not have a crew dedicated solely to this. The workers who take the sand off the Great Highway also work on other street projects, including removing illegal dumping and debris,” she said. “We have to balance the competing needs. … If we had the magic wand and could run crews all the time, we would do it.”
