San Francisco Human Rights Commission Executive Director Sheryl Davis leads far-reaching efforts to promote equity and redress wrongs
Sheryl Evans Davis, the executive director of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, has a knack for starting social-service programs that take on a life of their own.
Davis went on to help run volunteer summer camps in the Western Addition. Davis was then recruited to do community outreach for then-Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi and later joined then-Public Defender Jeff Adachi’s office, where in 2006, she launched the Mo’MAGIC Collaborative, a public-private initiative in the Fillmore District to help kids and prevent violence.
Today, Davis oversees a department that has tripled in size under her watch to nearly 50 full- and part-time employees, with a budget of $28.5 million for investigating and mediating discrimination complaints and supporting an increasingly wide variety of programs addressing social inequities. Davis is also leading Black 2 San Francisco, the Mayor’s recently announced effort to recruit one or more of the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities to operate a satellite campus in The City.

One example is the monumental Dream Keeper Initiative. This far-reaching effort involves multiple city agencies and is aimed particularly at bolstering San Francisco’s Black population through growing economic and educational outcomes, providing access to holistic health and wellness programs, and ameliorating past harms, such as the displacement of Black residents as a result of urban renewal.
