The Giants invited more than 30 pitchers to camp last spring and viewed depth as a critical component to their success.
The transaction freeze resulting from Major League Baseball’s lockout remains in place, but that hasn’t kept the Giants’ front office from pursuing avenues to improve the organization’s depth.
The Giants are unable to sign major league free agents or execute trades involving players on the 40-man roster until MLB owners and the Players Association agree to a new collective bargaining agreement, but San Francisco has still been active in pursuing minor league free agents. Guzman missed the entire 2021 season due to an elbow injury and according to MLB Trade Rumors, the hard-throwing righty underwent Tommy John surgery in September. Guzman’s agency congratulated the pitcher on Instagram for signing a two-year minor league deal with the Giants, which indicates he’ll likely spend most of 2022 rehabbing while preparing to pitch competitively in 2023.
