SAN FRANCISCO — Call it poor timing. Call it bad luck. Call it another Giants loss with their ace on the mound.
He took a shutout into the seventh, then found himself in a 2-2 count against Alex Burleson. Catcher Blake Sabol put his glove up high for a fastball above the zone. Webb threw it right there and Burleson smoked it 385 feet to right-center for a solo shot. The peripheral stats looked good. His fastball velocity was up. He generated 13 swing-and-misses. He struck out seven and walked only one. But Webb keeps losing.
It’s a stat often used to predict a pitcher’s luck; the average HR/FB rate is 10% and it often fluctuates based on factors not specifically tied to the pitch quality/location.
