About five homes were evacuated near the border of Oak Bay and Victoria following a gas leak Tuesday morning.

FortisBC spokesperson Lauren Lea says an "external party" struck a gas main while digging near the intersection of Fairfield Road and Shotbolt Road.

The gas company received a call about the damaged gas line around 9:10 a.m. and had crews at the scene by 10 a.m.Lea says crews were still assessing the damage and determining the best way to make repairs around 11 a.m. Fairfield Road was also closed in both directions between Foul Bay Road and Denison Road Tuesday morning.

City of Victoria workers could be seen in the area digging on the street to install a new sidewalk, though Lea says it's not yet clear who caused the gas leak. "The priority right now is to be able to stop the leak and then fix the damage," she said, noting that the cause would be investigated later.
