'He’s incapable of empathy,' Meyers said of the president on Wednesday. 'He only has two emotions: boredom and rage”

if more Americans will die should the country move forward with reopening the economy—even as cases of coronavirus continue to rise—Presidentbasically shrugged. “It’s possible there will be some, because you won’t be locked into an apartment or a house or whatever it is,” Trump said, later adding of the 30 million Americans who are unemployed, “Well, that is what it is.”.

With the coronavirus death toll topping 74,000 so far, Meyers used his latest edition of A Closer Look to hammer Trump for his apparently laissez-faire attitude toward American lives. “You would think that putting aside his venality, his narcissism, and his deadly incompetence, Donald Trump could, at the very least, muster a little empathy for the victims of this pandemic, their loved ones, and the millions who have put themselves in harm's way, lost jobs, or made tremendous personal sacrifices during this crisis,” he said. “But of course, he can’t do that, because he’s incapable of empathy. He only has two emotions: boredom and rage.

“Trump wants you to be a warrior while he sits safely isolation at the White House,” Meyers said, before referencing the“I would join in, but I feel another bone spur coming on—which is devastating to me, because the last one happened right before the Vietnam War,” Meyers said, impersonating Trump. “I mean, what are the chances that happens again now?”

Switching back to his own voice, Meyers added, “This is truly sadistic. The president is telling you to go out and face off against this deadly virus all for the sake of the stock market. The only way that could be more out of touch is if he said it while dousing himself in Purell and holding a 36-pack of toilet paper.”The Late Showwas left similarly appalled by the president’s laid-back response to the fact that more Americans will die as the economy opens back up.
