As Canadian evacuations from the Middle East continue amid the Israel-Hamas war, concern is rising for the safety of the local staff at Canada’s embassies near the ever-expanding conflict zones. Two Senators spotlighted worries for the safety of local staff working at Canada's diplomatic missions during an Oct. 25 meeting of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee as the more than three-week long clash between Israel and Hamas continues to intensify.

Canada’s commitment to locally engaged staff was put under the microscope recently amid the evacuation of its embassies in Afghanistan and Ukraine. In Afghanistan, some people who had worked with the Canadian Embassy went into hiding, fearing Taliban reprisals, while waiting for immigration processing to be completed. In Ukraine, local staff were kept in the dark about the possibility of being placed on a Russian kill list in the days leading up to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb.
