Sen. Martha McSally tells an audience she decided to reveal she had been raped while in the Air Force just two days before the dramatic moment that put a new spotlight on sexual assault in the military.
A few months ago, she said, it “wouldn’t have been in the cards," to speak at an event at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., focused on sexual assault and harassment at colleges, universities and service academies. The main entrance gate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., April 19, 2016.
“I stayed silent for many years, but later in my career, as the military grappled with the scandals, and their wholly inadequate responses, I felt the need to let some people know I too was a survivor," McSally told the Senate Armed Services Committee in March. "I was horrified at how my attempt to share generally my experiences was handled.”May 14, 2002 file photo of then-Air Force Lt. Col. Martha McSally on Capitol Hill.
