Harry Belafonte became, through his talent and integrity and compassion, a model for how noble people can be when their actions live up to their ideals.
FILE - James Foreman, executive secretary of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee, left, Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., center, head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and activist-singer Harry Belafonte appear during a press conference in Atlanta on April 30, 1965. Belafonte died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his New York home. He was 96. When great men and women die, you feel their loss immediately.
Born in Harlem, Belafonte spent much of his childhood in Jamaica, the country from which his parents had emigrated. He grew up to love the music. “Banana Boat Song ,” a selection from the album, became a huge hit. As powerful and courageous as these artistic statements were, they were not enough. It was as if every night, when he went to bed, he took a mental inventory of his daily activities, those long-ago words from his mother ringing in his ear.“I wasn’t an artist who became an activist,” Belafonte wrote in his memoir, “My Song.”
