'I run for my family. Everything I do, every check I bring home, goes to them, whether that’s back home in Kenya to build my family a better home, or here in Auburn, California, with my daughter, Belvia.'
Jane Kibii, 35, is originally from Kenya and currently resides in Auburn, California, where she runs for a living. Below she shares her story of being a single mom and a pro runner to support her family in the U.S. and back home.
Running was a talent I knew I had after high school. My father didn’t have money to send me to college, and I didn’t want to ask for more help anyway. I thought maybe I could chip in through running. All of my motivations come from my family. It hasn’t been easy. Like any working single mother, balancing work and life presents many challenges. I do think God put a natural ability to do that inside women, but it still requires patience, self-discipline, and sacrifices. Seeing my daughter and my family happy is worth everything I do. I know they appreciate it, so I support them wherever I can.
