A circle of Colt .38 caliber Model 1877"Lightning" revolvers are just some of the many firearms in the McCombs Collection.McCombs didn’t collect to adorn his home, according to Robert Tidwell, the collection’s part-time curator and a curator at Texas Tech’s National Ranching Heritage Center.
“He collected because he had a passion for preserving history and because he wanted the items he collected to be displayed, appreciated and to educate,” Tidwell said. Among Tidwell’s favorites include a cannon from the Alamo and two Gatling guns. But he's also partial to items that illustrate more common slices of life, such as the ledger from General George Custer’s military unit, which lists everyday items received and disbursed.A Great War sword, middle, meant to be swung with two hands and dating to the 16th century, is menacing enough it could have been a"Game of Thrones" prop.
“He’d ask Bob Orbello, who was the curator until he died, to find out any information he could about an item,” she said. “He was very proud of the collection.”Suzy Thomas, McCombs' assistant for almost 50 years, reminisces about working for him at the McCombs Plaza.Many of the items in his collection are on long-term loan where they can be viewed by the general public.
