The motor car's past, present, future, and allure are the subject of a new exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum
The motor car is one of the most significant creation of modern time. It transformed how we live, work, travel, communicate, build cities in the last century. Its design, the technologies it explores, the materials and structure and its high-end engineering continue to inform architecture, design, products - sometimes even fashion. The motor car seduced generations; its spirit drove art, literature, cinema, music.
“This exhibition is about the power of design to effect change,” offers co-curator Brendan Cormier, adding “and the unintended consequences that have contributed to our current environmental situation.” For anyone who hasn’t visited the V&A, this is a truly exciting space. Founded in 1852, its millions of design objects, sculptures, ancient art and artifacts form a labyrinth of arts and ideas.
Ford’s Model-T show the motor car as the archetype of modern manufacturing, the object that shaped contemporary consumerism and turned production companies into global powerhouses. As a contrast , a custom-made Hispano-Suiza Type H6B car from 1922 sees the pull of luxury and craft even at the early stages of automotive design. Elsewhere, General Motors’ Art and Color Studio started the trend for more personalized cars.Walter P.
The final chapter reviews the vast impact of the motor car on the world’s landscape, nations and cities. We see how fossil fuel engine overcame early electric and steam-powered competitors by promising the ability to travel the world. It’s interesting to view all this in connection to the geography of petrol extraction, celebrated then as a miracle resource through products like Tupperware and nylon.
Another film reveals the continuing power of the motor car to be a vehicle, literally, of making personal statements. A commissioned documentary shows five contemporary subcultures around the world - from the South African spinners, Los Angeles low-riders, the Emirati dune racers and Japan’s colorful Decotora truckers. “We wanted to get across how incredibly personal the car is as an object,” says Bisley. “They are reclaiming the car, seeing it as a way of personal expression.
