KIRO 7 News StaffSEATTLE — Classes will be delayed for nearly 50,000 students in the state’s largest school district after members of the teachers’ union voted to strike if no agreement was reached with the district overnight.
The result of the vote by SEA members was announced during a news conference early Tuesday afternoon. There have been bargaining sessions all summer long, but the contract between teachers and the district expired on Aug. 31. Consulting teacher Liz Ruiz-Puyana argues the $161 million sitting in the district’s reserve fund needs to be used. The former science teacher says pandemic dollars have not been spent either.
