Seasonal martyr syndrome is back this Christmas - and thank goodness for that 🎄 I’ve got to drive to my home town and cook in a kitchen I don’t know for a rather fussy group of people of all ages. I can't wait 🔵 janegarvey1 for ipaperviews
Jane Garvey: Seasonal martyr syndrome is back this Christmas – and thank goodness for that
Christmas Day certainly has its own special magic – it goes on for years. You glance at the time at about 8.45am, and that seems reasonable. Cheers! I can do this! A weak Buck’s Fizz is just the job. Maybe not that weak, as it turns out. In fact, Santa is an absolutely typical bloke. It’s easy for him to be twinkly and full of bonhomie in his cosy grotto, but ask yourself: apart from the undeniably hectic delivery schedule on the 24th, what does the man actually do? Have you seen him looking for gift tags late on Christmas Eve or chasing the post-person halfway down the street to tip them? No. He’s a bare-minimum merchant. I bet he sleeps like a baby, and the elves will all get Amazon vouchers. Again.
But still, someone must make sure there is a small Christmas pudding to hand just in case a contrarian requests a tiny taste. Of course, if one person asks, it might catch on and all the older folk will hop on board so perhaps you should grab a bigger one, just in case? Did you remember the cranberry sauce? No one likes it, but that’s not the point! Christmas isn’t about enjoying yourself.
By the time I was fit to rejoin humanity, it was Christmas Eve and I was a new-ish woman. But something was dawning on me: what on earth was I going to do without the stress of the preparations to overwhelm and infuriate me?
