The Maple Leafs announced on Wednesday that the 34-year-old defenceman won’t play again in 2022-23.

The Leafs’ hottest line, at least coming out of the 6-3 win in Buffalo on Tuesday, has formed a mutual admiration society. All of captain John Tavares, newcomer Ryan O’Reilly and Mitch Marner figured the line was on the cusp of breaking out, and that became reality when the trio combined for 13 points.

We’re not sure how long coach Sheldon Keefe will keep Tavares on the left wing, though it’s not going to be permanent. For now, it’s working well. O’Reilly certainly is enjoying his new surroundings through three games since being acquired from the St. Louis Blues. “It’s much nicer playing with him than against him, that’s for sure,” O’Reilly said of Marner. “So smart. You see the playmaking ability, the vision. The plays he’s making, it’s so dynamic, so dangerous. Johnny too. They’re so connected, they work hard, they make little plays. It’s a lot of fun playing with them.”Article content“Playing against him, it was always a little bit of a chess match because he understands and reads the game so well,” Tavares said.
