Library one of major offerings at refurbished John Landes Community Center in Oceanside
The recession in 2008 affected cities, just like everyone else, and tough decisions were made.
Such a band reflected the desire to present activities culturally relevant to the neighborhood, said Monica Chapa-Domercq, principal librarian, during a recent visit to the center. There has also been a food pantry still operated by the Rev. Sheldon Brown, who, along with Wayne Godinet from the Samoan community, has been partnering with the new programs.
It was the oldest stop for the library bookmobile, but only about 4 percent of the population in the area’s two census tracts held library cards. In the Neighborhood Services office, Maureen Jones, resource-center assistant, says she’s there to help with anyone’s needs, which differ from day to day. Jones called herself “a connector,” matching people with resources.
