International scrutiny of Uvalde will fade; grief will remain

About 10:30 p.m. Sunday, families walked silently past the metal barricades in front of Robb Elementary School.

Uvalde residents have struggled to understand why 18-year-old gunman Salvador Ramos unleashed such unspeakable violence. Now, they’re beginning to feel the full weight of their grief. Many have visited the ever-growing memorial at Uvalde’s town square, partly to connect with others who are just as shocked and horrified as they.

“Everyone is trying to pull themselves together,” said truck driver Charlie Rattler Sr., 63, on Monday morning. “Every time I turn on the TV, it’s about the massacre. We’re living this over and over and over again. It’s so overwhelming. It’s affecting everyone trying to pull themselves together.” A 38-year-old father of a Boy Scout said he had avoided talking to reporters. He’d rather call or text the families of the dead to offer condolences or ask if they need anything from H-E-B or Walmart.
