Scientists made the determination after reviewing aircraft and surface winds, surface pressures, satellite intensity estimates and Doppler radar velocities. “This one just happened to cross one of those thresholds,” he said. “It puts it in a pretty small list of Category 5 hurricane landfalls in the United States.”
