.) It’s that we humans find it challenging to detect whether scientific arguments and conclusions were painstakingly written by dedicated, hard-working researchers—or produced at the press of a button by a computer program.

But to believably replicate scientific writing, AI has to replicate more than an article’s banal, indifferent character. It needs to capture another sin we’ve stuffed our writing with—our overconfidence. Again, AI only highlights and satirizes an existing problem: Our writing boasts about its own significance because our career advancement currency is all life-changing research, all the time. The phony abstracts fooled us because the point of scientific writing is often to sound so abstruse, so erudite, that readers shrug and say, “Well, that was complicated, so the author probably knows what they’re talking about.
