The samples were collected from different area of the Southern Ocean, and classified after DNA sequencing allowed the scientists to take a closer look at the purple to dark red animals' complex morphology. The Antarctic strawberry feather star was found to fall under the Crinoidea class, which also contains sea urchins, starfish, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers. Rouse said the inspiration for its name came from the Latin word for strawberry -Promachocrinus fragarius
