Senate Democrats reached a deal with Republicans to defer a showdown over the debt ceiling until December, averting a possible government default
WASHINGTON—Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that Democrats and Republicans hadto extend the debt ceiling through early December and that the Senate could pass the measure as soon as later Thursday, putting off a possible government default for several months.
“It’s our hope that we can get this done as soon as today,” said the New York Democrat in a brief statement on the Senate floor.
