September 20, 2022, started like any other Tuesday at school. The only thing special about it was that it was picture day. I sat at my desk in AP physics, second period, as students with last names beginning F through K were sent to get their photos taken. The A through E students had just come back into the room, smiling and laughing, breathing new life into the class when we needed it.
For those who are fortunate enough to be uninitiated, a “soft lockdown” occurs when there is a possible threat in a nearby area, but usually no imminent danger. Generally, classes are allowed to resume as scheduled. A “hard lockdown” occurs when there is a present danger to students and emergency measures go into effect.
As a student in North Carolina, I have experienced regular active-shooter drills and lockdowns since I was in elementary school, beginning not long after the Sandy Hook tragedy on December 14, 2012, when 20 children and six educators were killed by a gunman. At a young age, I was schooled on the different kinds of lockdowns. I became accustomed to turning off the lights, covering the windows, and pulling down the shade to cover the window at the door.
