For many people, buying a home is the biggest and most life-changing purchase they’ll ever make. For one local couple, their dream was nearly their greatest disaster.

The Callahan couple told the I-TEAM their $50,000 down payment was wired to a scammer.

Instead of going into the closing company’s bank account, their $50,000 down payment went to a scammer.Emails provided by Tony Hale show Cheryl was communicating with employees at the companies working with them on the closing –the Bernard & Schemer law firm and Coast2Coast Mortgage. At least that’s what she thought.Who Cheryl believed was the real estate closer with the law firm started asking for the cash to close, emailing her five times on January 11 to ask for the money.

That same day, she received those magic words in another email from who she thought was the mortgage lender– but it came from the same email pretending to be the law firm employee: closing.procesing@gmail.com.She wired the money-- more than $50,000. Windness said she sees scams like this weekly. She said real estate closings are an attractive target for scammers.

She said, for example, a victim can be fooled into thinking an online scammer is a love interest, and then open an account thinking they’re helping their online love interest, but they’re unwittingly laundering money that was stolen in a down payment scheme. Take it from Tony Hale. When asked what it’s like not knowing if he’ll get his money back, his response was “devastating.”
