As of today, drones built by Spiri Robotics of Halifax are not being used to hunt Russian tanks on the battlefields of Ukraine.“We’re aware of a lot of different drones that are in use over there,” Spiri president Patrick Edwards-Daugherty said Wednesday at the DEFSEC trade show in Halifax. “They are used for delivering munitions, and it’s not just the big ones you think of, like the Predator drones and those sorts of things, drones about the size of ours are used in that way.
“A basic, baseline robot, and that’s not a bad robot, still the best in its class, but say one being used by a university researcher … that could be $4,000-5,000, and something that’s fully kitted out is more like $12,000,” said Edwards-Daugherty, who started sales of the MU in late 2019 and has sold between 100 and 200.
“I think the applications that have to do with the environment and our infrastructure are the ones with the biggest commercial markets,” Edwards-Daugherty said. “So, supporting marine navigation, things like being involved in the opening of the Northwest Passage, the needs of ports and waterways, assessing the quality of water for fisheries and for developers and for municipalities.”
