Savage says Alberta has inspectors at Kearl tailings spills, working group being formed ableg abpoli cdnpoli
Kaitlin Power, a spokeswoman for Guilbeault, said Imperial Oil’s communication regarding the spills was unacceptable and has raised concerns about the quality of Alberta’s notification systems. Ottawa wants the working group to include Indigenous communities and have participation from oil companies, she added. Details are expected soon. More meetings are needed before the working group can begin.
“It is a joint federal-provincial jurisdiction under the Constitution when you deal with water and potential treat-and-release or what are the various options for dealing with long-term tailings ponds,” she said. “I think it does require a joint solution and it does require working together.”Article content
Environment and Climate Change Canada says the leaks are harmful to fish and wildlife and Imperial Oil has been ordered to contain and stop the leaks before it enters fish-bearing waters. The company has apologized and admitted the incident should have been made public earlier. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is remaining cautious. Their tests have found Fort Chipewyan’s drinking water is safe, but to be sure the community’s water treatment plant is now relying on a reservoir. When the reservoir is refilled, extensive treatment and testing will be done before it is given to the community.
