Altered school year good for catching up on assignments or rest; outgoing Sault College President Ron Common reflects on past year and big plans ahead

Sault College will continue its 7-1-7 curriculum plan for students in both terms of the 2023-24 academic year.

“We used to have a winter break but now we’ll have one break in the first and second terms. They went a long time without a break before so we thought we’ll implement a break in both terms,” Common said.A survey of students indicated that they liked the altered academic year schedule, Common said. “It’s good for student outcomes because it gives them a study break. It gives them a chance to catch up on assignments. That’s the whole intention and professors are available to help the students during that break period,” said Sault College spokesperson Rick Webb, though he and Common are emphasizing 7-1-7 as a rest period.“We’re very pleased with the college’s Employment Services and Student Job Centre,” Common said.

Common added that the college has embedded Indigenous content in the school’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
