Health Minister Paul Merriman said the dollars are needed for the “massive fourth wave,” which he says wasn’t anticipated
for the additional funds, stating the expense is “urgently and immediately required for the public good.”
“We were getting into booster shots. It was certainly something we didn’t budget for back in January because we were just starting our whole vaccination program.”“This all costs dollars and the majority of these dollars are human resources, which is well needed and well deserved,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of people working a lot of overtime and taking up shifts and wanted to make sure we have enough money to compensate them for that.
“It cost people their lives, but it also cost Saskatchewan people their precious dollars, and we see that again here,” Wotherspoon said.Tracy Zambory, the president of the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses, has said previously the additional dollars are a reflection of the burnout many staff have been experiencing.Merriman said Wednesday the province wants the health-care system to run at top speed.
“Within the health-care system, as I’ve learned in the past 15 months, you never know what’s around the corner.”He said Saskatchewan’s third-quarter financial update is no longer reported separately and instead attached to the budget.
