Saskatchewan reported just five women of child\u002Dbearing age diagnosed with syphilis in 2016. In 2021, preliminary data found 851.

Doctors and advocates say the rising rates demonstrate a need to expand prenatal outreach to at-risk women, who often grapple with poverty, homelessness and other health problems that can cause them to slip through the cracks.

“I would say syphilis in pregnancy was not common even when I started only six years ago,” said Saskatoon family physician Dr. Kali Gartner. “And now it is something we see weekly, for sure.” “What has really tipped the scale from about 2019 onward is that we start seeing more female cases,” Saskatoon medical health officer Dr. Johnmark Opondo said.

“On paper, we might have really good access to prenatal care in Saskatchewan,” Gartner said. “But there are still many barriers to accessing those services and getting testing and blood work done.” Dr. Ibrahim Khan said COVID-19 sapped resources from Saskatchewan’s long fight against HIV and other infectious diseases.Roberts said socioeconomic factors, stigma and fear keep many women from seeking help, and trauma-informed services are key.
