Santa Clara’s original downtown was razed to the ground in the 1960s as part of an urban renewal effort.
As Santa Clara moves forward with its plan to revitalize downtown, a group of residents wants the city to consider moving city hall back downtown in hopes of bolstering foot traffic and encouraging investors to redevelop the area.
In 2019, the city shelled out $400,000 to craft a plan for redeveloping the 25-acres of land that’s considered downtown and bound by Benton Street, Lafayette Street, Homestead Road and Madison Street. The current vision is to restore the original street grid — including Franklin Street — and create a downtown with storefront retail and offices and housing on top.
