The Santa Clara City Council voted 4-3, with some councilmembers wanting the county to explore more permanent housing.

SANTA CLARA — A 30-unit interim housing complex for homeless families may soon be erected on a parcel of county-owned land on the corner of Lawrence Expressway and Benton Street.

The project is expected to be funded through several different revenue streams, but the county has been banking on a large portion of the money coming from Project Homekey — a pandemic-era initiative from Gov. Gavin Newsom to convert and create transitional housing for homeless individuals. Santa Clara on Tuesday, however, declined to be a co-sponsor on the application for the funds, bucking responsibility to the county — if they accept.

Similar concerns about the Lawrence Expressway and Benton Street site relating to crime have arisen over the last several months, despite the county reconfiguring the project and downsizing it from 124 units for homeless individuals to 30 units for homeless families to address community feedback. Gillmor said she had an “uneasy feeling” about the project, while Chahal questioned whether the project was “fiscally sound.”
