The Nov. 4 concert will include the first performance anywhere of composer Texu Kim’s Welcome Home!! Fanfare for Jacobs Music Center and the first West Coast performance of Grammy-winner Billy Childs’ Saxophone Concerto, along with works by Mozart, Strauss and Debussy. The fact that the piece is also known as The Resurrection Symphony makes it especially well-suited for the orchestra’s return to the 94-year-old concert venue, which has been the symphony’s home since 1985.
“It is very noisy and I consider every single decibel a sign of promise,” Gilmer said. “I’m enjoying every vibration!” Gilmer has also played a pivotal role in the ongoing transformation of Copley Symphony Hall at Jacobs Music Center. The venue’s spotty acoustics have been an issue for performers and audiences alike, especially those seated farther back on the venue’s main floor.
The team doing the renovations includes award-winning acoustician Paul Scarbrough, who recently played a key role in the $500 million-plus reinvention of New York’s David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. Scarbrough attended his first Copley Symphony Hall concert 31 years ago and has watched the San Diego Symphony evolve in the subsequent decades.
Now, their goal is to make the orchestra’s return to the hall as seamless and inviting as possible, the better to attract longtime symphony concertgoers and new audiences alike.“I’m really hoping that by November we will all have got comfortable and feel safe going back indoors. I’m confident we’ll create an atmosphere here in the hall that people will absolutely feel comfortable with. With our indoor and outdoor concert venues, we have the best of both worlds.
