San Diego County's unemployment rate has stayed around the same level for several months. Tourism hiring has made up for losses in other sectors

San Diego County’s unemployment rate dropped slightly in July as tourism hiring surged, outweighing losses in construction.

San Diego County’s labor force — adults who either have a job or are actively looking for one — was 1.59 million people in July, about 9,000 more than the same time last year. Employers struggling to find workers is still an issue, say staffing agencies, but it has improved compared to 2022 when more than 20,000 workers had seemingly disappeared.

Blair said there isn’t any particular industry they are having trouble filling jobs for but companies that are still only hiring temporary workers are typically passed over by job seekers in favor of permanent work. He said another sticking point for workers seeing office jobs is if the workplace is not remote or hybrid, with most companies Manpower works with doing around three days in the office.

As typical of this time of year, teachers out for summer break weighed down the jobless numbers. There were around 12,600 job losses in education from June to July, which is around historical averages.
