San Diego is paying out $1.2 million to a driver who suffered significant back injuries when a city dump truck rear-ended him in southeastern San Diego five years ago.

Cota was turning left from Briarwood Road onto Paradise Valley Road in the Bay Terraces neighborhood just after 6:40 a.m. on April 5, 2017, when a city dump truck driven by a city worker rear-ended his 2012 Chevy Equinox. Cota sued one year later. “He had an odyssey of a medical journey,” said Oliver, who works for the Barnes Firm in downtown San Diego.Cota, who was a parts runner for Mercedes-Benz before the crash, is now in school re-training for a career that doesn’t involve physical activity, Oliver said. He lives in San Diego’s Encanto neighborhood.
