Monthly fees for most single-family homes would rise from $81.07 to $93.55; hikes would be city's first comprehensive increases since 2015
The city blames severe staffing shortages for investigations into unusual meter readings taking too long, forcing the city to suspend billing for many months. The goal of the increases is raising the annual revenue generated by the city’s water system from $566 million to just over $600 million, city officials said.
The city has just directly passed on to customers increases in the price of imported water imposed by the San Diego County Water Authority. That included separate 3 percent hikes last January and in January 2022. The legal challenge says every customer should pay the same rate per gallon. It contends tiers violate California Proposition 218 by charging differing rates for the same service.
The proposal would raise monthly rates for a typical single-family homeowner from $81.07 to $93.55. An earlier version of the proposal would have raised the bills of typical single-family homeowners to $103.06 per month.
