San Diego city workforce vaccination rate reaches 90 percent, officials say [Breaking]
The city of San Diego announced Monday that 90 percent of its workforce are vaccinated against COVID-19, while some 790 employees will be exempt from the city’s vaccine mandate.
The city will require the unvaccinated employees who were granted exemptions — which includes about 350 police officers — to undergo weekly, on-the-job testing at no cost to them. Any employees who refuse to comply with the testing requirement will face termination, officials said. Mayor Todd Gloria said about 69 percent of city employees were vaccinated before the city imposed the mandate last year.
“It’s unquestionably to the public’s benefit for City employees to stay healthy and on the job, safely serving residents, and I am committed to maintaining policies that protect San Diegans,” the mayor said in a statement. “I’m grateful to our employees for joining me in this effort.”Some employees, police officers and firefighters in particular, opposed the vaccine requirement.
As of Monday, the city had denied two medical-based requests and 13 religious-based requests, it said. According to the city, the requests were denied either because information employees provided in their requests was not substantiated or the request did not include sufficient information.Among exemptions granted, 351 — or about half — covered San Diego police officers. A total of 473 officers had requested exemptions, according to city data.
