To meet rising demand, new food bank pantry offering more hours, more options.

A few days ago he visited the new pantry of the North County Food Bank, a chapter of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, and left with two bags of groceries.He was a regular at the food bank’s drive-through distribution center, where volunteers load goods like pasta and bags of produce into people’s cars. But as much as he appreciates that food, sometimes those pre-assembled packages have things he can’t stomach. Like cucumbers.
The Vista pantry is at the bank’s same site as its North County food distribution drive-through. Unlike the drive-through, the pantry gives people choices, said Wendy Starling, director of the North County Food Bank. Before the pandemic, the San Diego Food Bank served 350,000 people per month countywide, through its programs and distribution partners. That swelled to 600,000 per month during the pandemic. This year, it’s around 500,000 a month.
But if you actually set foot in the pantry, the user experience is very different. You are basically in a grocery store, minus price tags, with shopping carts, a freezer section, baskets of fresh produce, and blasting A/C. There is also a section with single-serve and no-heat foods that make easy meals for people without a kitchen.The pantry is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays. Most visits are by appointment, available on the bank’sDemand has been increasing.
