“This was my ode to all the pop rebels out there,” the singer tells Bazaar.com of their subversive pink-carpet look
premiere. In Sam Smith's case, the history-making Grammy winner delivered a poignant fashion statement by embracing the anti-Barbie inside them.
Smith teamed up with Vetements creative director Guram Gvasalia for the London premiere of Greta Gerwig's highly-anticipated film. Together, the two curated a look that had the singer dressed in a dramatically oversize outfit that played with proportions—a subversive counterweight to the glittering cotton candy“This was my ode to all the pop rebels out there,” Smith tells.
“Dress codes are so predictable. Somehow cute and pink would be the first thought [of] what to wear to a Barbie movie premiere,” Gvasalia says, explaining the thought process behind Smith's outfit. “Sam is so unique and unexpected, that pink and fluffy would have been too easy. It’s not only the outfit, it’s a statement of inclusion. It’s a message for all the kids out there who feel like they don’t belong.
With Smith's new song, “Man I Am,” they join the ranks of other A-list musicians tapped to create music for the fantasy comedy film, including Nicki Minaj, Dua Lipa, and Billie Eilish.“I cannot begin to express how incredibly excited I am to be a part of the soundtrack to this already iconic film,” Smith previously said in a statement.
In his own statement, Ronson said Smith's track is “one of the most epic pieces of sexual synth pop majesty I have ever been a part of and the final piece of Ken's story. ... I cannot wait for you to hear this song with the icon Sam Smith.”
