If we value politicians who do more than just follow the dictates of their leaders, these sorts of outcomes are inevitable

Yet if we value politicians who do more than just follow the dictates of their leaders, these sorts of outcomes are inevitable. Free-thinking individuals will inevitably make mistakes. While we may find the idea of meeting with certain people indefensible, we should at the very least tolerate the idea that reasonable people can disagree.

But this case, more than anything, reveals the disconnect between the hopes and expectations we place on the individuals we elect to Parliament. Many pundits, academics and average citizens have argued that the problem with Canada’s political system is that party leaders, and in particular the prime minister, are too strong, and that the way to fix this is to empower the initiatives of more independent and free-thinking MPs.

When MPs disagree with the dictates of political correctness, many members of the public tar their entire party as inextricably racist, sexist or homophobic. Members who push back against the prime minister are taken to mean that the entire government is falling apart, that even the prime minister’s own people think he is not fit to lead.
