Salvation Army backpack program in P.E.I. sees increase demand this year

Applications to program rise this year while donations have dropped

“We're trying to provide backpacks for all of those. But we're only providing school supplies for high school students because the government provides school supplies up until Grade 9.” “The money that we collect at Christmas time goes to assist families and people in need throughout the year. So, we are using some money we have from that kind of thing to make up the difference for that because we do have more people registered to receive school supplies this year than we did last year.”

The numbers aren’t surprising, she said. The Salvation Army has also seen an increasing number of people coming through its doors for other programs. “We're always very grateful for, you know, people who contribute financially and volunteers who come in to help us. We wouldn't be able to do everything we're doing without the support we have from the community.”
