is an unsettling psychological case study and a tense, enigmatic courtroom drama rolled into one. The film takes its name from the seaside town in France where an abominable, difficult-to-grasp crime occurred – an infanticide, by a French-Senegalese mother who left her infant to drown in the rising tide of the beach one terrible evening.
It’s based on the real 2016 murder trial of Fabienne Kabou, here renamed as Laurence and played with a disturbing stillness by Guslagie Malanga – an enigmatic performance of an equally enigmatic woman. Laurence repeats her deeply held belief that the supernatural has played a role in her choice to kill her baby. Filtered through one very extreme murder trial, the film tackles social and racial dislocation, the conflicting feelings of motherhood within that context, and white disdain for the African diaspora.Alice Diop, also born to a Senegalese family, attended the trial in real life and made a documentary about it.
