Certain branches now require customers to scan their receipt or they 'can't leave'.

In some cases, you'll need to scan your receipt at the self-checkouts before you can leave as a way to provide proof of purchase. Shoppers won't be able to leave until they do this, which has sparked fury on social media.

Many people are frustrated at this new rule, saying they "never" get receipts when they pay for their shopping via self-checkout. Some have even said they'll now be boycotting the supermarket as a form of protest. The Mirror reports that angry Sainsbury's shoppers have been complaining about the rule change on Twitter.Another added: "Essentially they are holding [people] hostage against their will as they refuse to let people leave without scanning a receipt that not everyone chooses to get in the first place.

One shopper described the move as an "appalling way to treat customers", while another agreed, saying: "I’ve been loyal to Sainsbury’s for 30 years. Now it stops."Not even the discounters to this.
