He said: “The fear of NHS leaders is that the risk to patients is only going to get worse with future strikes planned. That is, unless the Government is able to reach agreement with the trade unions to bring a swift end to the dispute. We urge the Government to do all it can to bring about an agreed solution, otherwise more members of the public will suffer unnecessarily.”
Heart attack and stroke patients could end up waiting so long for an ambulance on Wednesday they deteriorate to the point of life or death, the country’s leading paramedic has suggested.Dr John Martin, president of the College of Paramedics,He said: “It’s not one or the other. Right now, today, we’re seeing long delays for patients. There are lots of patients waiting at the moment for an ambulance response. On Wednesday, even with the derogations, that’s likely to be worse.
Rachel Harrison, a national secretary at GMB, told MPs on the health committee that unless the Health Secretary is willing to talk about pay, ambulance strikes will go ahead. She said category 1 would be covered by workers, and suggested agreement has been reached in most areas on other categories. Unite leader, Sharon Graham, accused the Government of scaremongering the public. She said: “It’s time to call things by their real names. The unions have agreed to provide cover tomorrow for life-threatening emergencies and serious cases like heart attack and stroke . That has been agreed at a host of local NHS trusts. Frankly, at best, the Government is misleading the public on this, and at worst deliberately scaremongering.
