Someone hit by a vehicle travelling 56 km/h is five times more likely to die than someone hit by a car travelling 32 km/h, a staff report said.
Councillors will consider a recommendation on Monday from staff to reduce speed limits after council directed staff to evaluate nine corridors last July.
The biggest change would be on Saanich’s seaside route, along Cordova Bay, Ash Road and Cadboro Bay Road, with the limit dropping to 40 km/h. Staff are also recommending dropping the speed limit on the summit road of PKOLS/Mount Douglas Park to 25 km/h. “I think the trade off here is that while it might cost folks a little bit more time, it’s going to save lives,” he said.If the bylaw is adopted, staff will remove current speed limit signs and install new ones.
