The century-old company has produced a few plays by playwrights of Spanish descent in its main theater, but none by Latino writers until this weekend.
"American Mariachi" is set in the 1970s and follows cousins Lucha and Boli as they try to form an all-female mariachi band — a big challenge since neither knows how to play an instrument.
"Being that it’s on the main stage, it sends a message to the city of what she’s about and what she’s trying to do with the company overall, with kind of shaking thing up a little bit," said Laura Garza, who co-founded and runs Teatro Audaz."Her whole season is not all about that, but she's definitely mixing it up, and mixing it up in a very good way. The theater has needed it for a while.
"It's a bucket-list show," Garza said."The story is about family, it's about tradition, it’s so enriched with our culture. It needs to be told not only all over San Antonio but all over the stages of our nation. I am so happy she decided to put this on stage. For me personally, it’s a joy being part of it.""You can feel it," said Jose de Hoyos, who plays Lucha's godfather in the show.
