Ohio State football coach Ryan Day said in the offseason he was considering turning play calling duties over to the offensive coordinator.
The first murmurs of a potential went public in January when Kirk Herbstreit said on ESPN College GameDay ahead of the Rose Bowl thatfrom play calling duties. The move would give him the chance to be more involved in other aspects of the program.
Monday’s declaration did not come as a surprise. When asked about the plan in preseason camp, Day certainly talked like someone who could not relinquish something that has been a huge part of his football identity. “I think it’s critical that I stay connected in all of that,” Day said at the start of preseason camp. “However we end up calling the plays or not, what matters is what the quarterback knows and how it’s all tied in together.
Day will likely entrust Hartline to call the occasional play. Hard to imagine him trusting anyone more than himself to guide the next starting quarterback through his first season, though.
