Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt played a majority of the Scarlet Knights' snaps in a win over Wagner. Coach Greg Schiano explains why.

“Certainly there’s a risk , there’s always a risk but he’s got to play,” the Rutgers coach said. “He’s a young quarterback. He’s got to play. You didn’t see him carrying the ball a lot, we weren’t going to put him in that spot. He did it himself a couple of times on some of those plays, which were pretty crafty of him, but no, he’s got to play. But it was good. I was encouraged again.

“He’s been practicing more since training camp,” Wimsatt said. “He’s getting comfortable. That’s a big part in us connecting. Getting better every week, that’s what we want to do now going into Big Ten play.”scrambling out of the pocket and going in untouched both times. Most importantly to Schiano and his staff, Wimsatt went another game without throwing an interception or committing a fumble on 62 total snaps. That marks the fourth time in five games this season that Wimsatt did not commit a turnover, surpassing his mark from last season in eight games.

It was an outing that may have lasted a bit too long if the sole focus was keeping him healthy. But the redshirt sophomore needs reps, and he was on board with staying on the field as long as he did.
