Former President Donald Trump belittled U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio during the 2016 presidential race, calling him “Little Marco' and won 66 of 67 Florida counties, knocking him out of the contest. Now Rubio says he 'thrilled' to be rallying with him.
There are questions about the strength of Rubio’s support within the GOP and whether his campaign is generating much enthusiasm. About 200 people came out for his Sarasota rally Tuesday.
The back-and-forth between Trump and Rubio was intense and personal. Rubio fired back by mocking Trump’s spray tan and saying he had small hands, adding: “and you know what they say about men with small hands.” Rubio’s disagreements with Trump didn’t end in the 2016 GOP presidential primary. The senator voted to certify the 2020 election results, which Trump continues to falsely claim are fraudulent.
Rubio delivered a 33-minute speech Tuesday that touched on everything from inflation to crime and immigration, all big themes for GOP candidates nationwide this election cycle. “You think that’s a terrible thing that happened to the Speaker’s husband, imagine if there wasn’t a police officer there to respond to it,” he said.
