Riders linebacker Derrick Moncrief is close to returning after having surgery in November.

“I’m a leader and I’ve always wanted to be a part of leading a young guy,” said Moncrief. “I remember coming in, I really didn’t have any help. I went in and got it on my own and learned the position. “For me to be able to be around those guys, give them good energy, help them out with film, whatever I can do, that’s what it’s all about.”“He’s one of our core leaders,” said head coach Craig Dickenson. “Even when he’s not playing, he still has a lot of influence in the locker room and a lot of say with the guys, so it’s good to have him around.”Article contentfor however long Moncrief is out.
“He’s really attentive in meetings,” said Moncrief. “He works hard, asks questions and he’s been on the squad for a year now so much is expected of him. It shouldn’t be a drop off if it’s me or him in the lineup.” However, Moncrief is eager to get back on the field and as he enters the final stretch in his recovery process, he reflects on what he has learned from one of the most challenging off-seasons in his career.“Just to be patient and just try to understand the process.”
